About the artist

In 1996, Sally Rockriver believed that gases could erupt from silica lakes on other planets. She devoloped a body of work about the geochemistry of Planetary Storms. In 2013, NASA discovered an Azure Planet that rains glass. Rockriver's vision had become a reality. Her current works explore the introduction of knowledge into human society. Rockriver's extraterrestrial specimens encounter the confines of present day thought. She uses a range of glass and ceramic processes and incorporates refractory bricks into landscapes and exploration videos. Rockriver has an MFA in Combined Medias from Hunter College, NYC.  As head of Ceramics at MSU-Moorehead MN, she learned to blow glass from Jon Offut. From the start, she combined ceramics and glass at high temperatures. Rockriver also studied under Nick Mount, Harumi Yukutake, and Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen.  In 2012, she taught a course at the Ox-bow School of Art, entitled "Beyond the Limits". Rockriver's students pursued their own core concept while combining glass with other materials. As a visiting scholar at the University Of North Carolina-Chapel Hiil, she received a grant from the National Science Foundation. Widely published and collected, she is represented by A.I.R.Gallery in NYC and Gallery C, in NC.
